Hawes: Reflections from Our North Valley MTB Group Trip

Last weekend, North Valley MTB loaded up bikes, packs, and a whole lot of enthusiasm as we headed out to Hawes for a group ride that reminded us—yet again—why mountain biking and mental well-being go hand in hand.

Hawes greeted us with its signature blend of rolling desert terrain and punchy singletrack—trails that demand focus, reward persistence, and offer those unexpected moments of flow that make every climb worth it. The early morning chill gave way to warm sunlight as we gathered at the trailhead, sharing coffee, pre-ride snacks, and that familiar hum of anticipation before a ride.

What unfolded on the trails was more than just a physical challenge. It was a shared experience that brought us closer together as a community.

Camaraderie on Every Climb

From the very first ascent, encouragement echoed through the group. Someone always had a quick tip, a steadying word, or a celebratory shout at the top. These moments—simple but powerful—are the heartbeat of North Valley MTB. They remind us that while the ride itself can be solitary, the journey never has to be.

At Hawes, that spirit came alive. Riders matched pace, waited at junctions, celebrated small wins, and laughed through the sandy sections that always seem to come out of nowhere. Whether someone was tackling a technical trail for the first time or cruising familiar lines, everyone had a place in the adventure.

Nature’s Reset Button

There’s something grounding about pedaling through open space. Out in Hawes, the desert quiet has its own kind of therapy. The rhythmic motion of riding, the concentrated attention on the trail, and the sweep of big skies overhead create a natural sense of clarity—one that many of us don’t realize we need until we’re out there feeling it.

Throughout the day, riders shared how refreshing it felt to unplug, breathe deeply, and simply be present. The trail doesn’t ask you to be anything other than exactly where you are, and that alone can make a world of difference.

Why These Rides Matter

Our mission at North Valley MTB has always centered on building a welcoming, supportive space where mountain biking and mental wellness meet. Trips like Hawes aren’t just about mileage or elevation—they’re about connection. They’re about finding strength on the trail and carrying it back into everyday life.

Two weeks later, the stories are still circulating: the tough switchback someone finally conquered, the view from the overlook we all paused to admire, the conversations that happened while rolling slowly back to the trailhead. These are the moments that stay with us and remind us why we ride.

Looking Ahead

If you missed this one, don’t worry—more group rides are coming, and every skill level is welcome. Whether you’re seeking challenge, community, or simply a chance to clear your mind outdoors, we’d love to have you join us.

Until then, keep rolling, keep connecting, and keep taking care of yourself—on and off the bike.
